Fixing, cleaning and testing – saving appliances from landfill

  • 2 mins read

Have you ever wondered what happens to that old washing machine which was taken away when your shiny new one was delivered?  Well, it might end up in Rework’s very capable hands.

They collect more than 100 old appliances a week and ferry them back to their Wandsworth base where they are thoroughly tested, any parts replaced, cleaned, tested again and spruced up for sale.

Their thoroughness is impressive: fridge freezers are monitored for three days to record their internal temperature fluctuations, old seals are renewed and cracked or missing shelves and baskets are replaced with spares which have been cannibalised from other appliances deemed beyond repair.

Washing machines are checked over part by part with an exhaustive checklist.  They are then run on a full wash three times to check how they perform – it’s always wash day in Wandsworth!

Every appliance is also deep cleaned and restored to an as-new level of cleanliness, I asked if they’d do my oven, but they’re a bit busy….

Finally, everything is PAT tested for electrical safety and given a warranty – 12 months when you buy from Richmond Furniture Scheme.

Rework’s commitment to avoiding waste is impressive, there are shelves and shelves of spare parts, from motors to circuit boards, and cooker elements to fridge shelves.  Even the cardboard and bubble wrap they use for sending out eBay sales are salvaged from the tip, but, don’t worry, it’s clean.

As well as supplying the white goods we sell at Richmond Furniture Scheme, Rework supply other charities across London and have launched an eBay shop for appliances and spare parts.

If you’d like to buy a refurbished appliance, which is well-tested and has a year-long warranty have a look at our online shop or visit our Twickenham warehouse.
